The place

The whole bay is in front of you.

The property sits on a small hill with the Pacific across the whole of it and the three rocks it is named after standing off the beach. The Ruta del Spondylus runs past, twenty kilometres south of Puerto López.

Las Tunas is an ancestral commune in the foothills of the Chongón Colonche range: Puerto Rico, Las Tunas, Las Cabañas and Ayampe. Jimmy and Gaby work with it.

Surf

Uncrowded waves, with your friends.

You can see the wave from your room. It runs all year on southerly swell and picks up northerly swell some months, and Jimmy, who runs the place with Gaby and wrote the lodge's own account of it, rates the mid tide on the push and puts the waves between one and three metres whatever the swell is doing.

Rooms

Plasma is the cheapest of the five rooms facing the water, $30 a night. Aire is the biggest at seventy two square metres and sleeps four for $33. Oasis takes six on bunks for $27. The whole range runs $24 to $45.

Staying a while

You can work from the hammock.

The wifi is fast enough to work on, there is a kitchen, a laundry and a garden growing food, and the whole place is built around long stays. Yoga and meditation run on the shala's wooden floor under the thatch, and they arrange massages and take retreats.

Jimmy tells people to watch from the beaches or the balconies. They come up from Tierra del Fuego to breed off Puerto López and stay until September, feeding only once they are back in polar water. Adults run twelve to sixteen metres and around thirty six tonnes. Only the males sing, in songs of ten to twenty minutes.

Whaling cut the population by ninety per cent. It was about twenty thousand at the 1966 moratorium and is over thirty five thousand now.
